Join Tevye on an unexpected journey when his daughters - who want to take their lives and future happiness into their own hands - challenge his views on life, love and tradition. Meanwhile, there is unrest in his community as the winds of change blow through his tiny, close-knit village."
~ Official Description for 'Fiddler on the Roof'
Following my second term at the University of York, it was a delight to be given the opportunity to return to King's Rochester, now as an Old Roffensian, and assist the Theatre Production team with the school's latest production of Fiddler on the Roof - a show which was proudly boasted as King's' first production in over 1000 days (their last play had been Titanic The Musical, for which I worked as the Sound Desk operator).
During the week I spent on the production, I served as both the Sound Supervisor on the Production Management team, and Sound Team Coordinator on the Creative Team.Â
Prior to the opening night, my role as Sound Team Coordinator put me in charge of creating Microphone Plots for the 24 radio mics - which I was able to approach in the same fashion as I had done with Titanic, although Fiddler's two-cast system introduced some fresh and unique challenges. This also included the plot for the Microphone Runners, to tell them when to switch microphones between cast members.
On the performance nights, my role as Sound Supervisor kicked into gear. Sitting with the rest of the Sound Team behind the same desk I had once operated for Titanic, my job was to give instructions on volume, as well as ensure that all microphones needed for each scene were switched on at the correct time. The role of Sound Team Coordinator carried on through this, as I was also in charge of liaising between the runners and the desk operators, which naturally included helping to fix any mistakes or issues that occurred backstage.
I had a lot of fun going back to King's to work on this amazing show, and it was nice to be able to pass on what I had learnt over my own years in Theatre Production.
