"... meet Christian. Christian's like your alpha-male -type ultra-military man but pretty cool, and will be joining out friend Cyrano's elite cadets."
~ Lignière
"Written in the style of spoken word verse, this play explores the story of Cyrano de Bergerac: a gifted wordsmith with a brilliant mind and a heart full of love, who must navigate the complexities of romance while dealing with his own mental health issues. Cyrano is secretly in love with Roxane, a beautiful woman who is also the object of desire for Christian, a handsome but not particularly intelligent man. When Christian confesses his love for Roxane to Cyrano, Cyrano sees an opportunity to win Roxane's heart for himself. He agrees to help Christian by writing love letters to Roxane on his behalf, using his own poetic talent to woo her."
Cyrano De Bergerac was the week five weekend show for the University of York Drama Society's Autumn Season 2023.
As lighting designer, my job was to try and bring the many locations featured throughout to life. Going for a 'timeless' atmosphere, I chose to make primary use of the Drama Barn's array of conventional lights, and incorporating the use of gobos (such as a windows for the house) as well as a single drop-light. Overall the aesthetic I was aiming for was warm, with lots of back light. An LED strip was then used in the Leila's Café scenes to indicate location.
